the 7th nite of july.its here again. and this time round. i didnt miss it.Tanabata (七夕, meaning "Seven Evenings") is a Japanese star festival, derived from Obon traditions and the Chinese star festival which is called Qi Xi. The festival is usually held on July 7th or Augest 7th and celebrates the meeting of Orihime (Vega) and Hikoboshi (Altair). The Milky way, a river made from stars that crosses the sky, separated these two lovers, and they were allowed to meet only once a year. This special day is the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar calendar.The legend of the Tanabata-Sama is said to have come from China. July is early autumn according to the lunar calendar. The stars called "the stream of heaven" can clearly be seen in the azure sky. Parted by it are two twinkling stars. One is a male star, drawing a cow, he must be a farmer. The other is a weaving maiden, a female star who perhaps made clothes. These two stars represent the way of the ancient people.Two stars that are separated by a river(milky way), one weaving and the other cultivating the field; cannot meet throughout the year. We are told that on the night of Tanabata-Sama(the 7th night of july) they can then cross the river to meet each other .The original Tanabata date was based on the Japanese Lunisolar Calendar, which is about a month behind the Gregorian calendar. As a result, some festivals are held on July 7, some are held on August 7, while remains are held still on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of Lunisolar calendar, which is usually in Gregorian August.
